How long should it take to do a cover letter and resume for a position?

I know you should tailor your resume and cover letter to each position but I find that I am spending a little too much time doing it. How much time is too much?

It depends on how much you want the job. I have busted out a quick cover letter (20 minutes or less) for lots of little part-time gigs that I'm interested in. But if there is a job that I'm really excited about and know is kind of long-shot, then I can take up to a few weeks working on it. Not all at once, of course (I have to eat! And go to my current job!) but a few hours here and there. And I'd usually take it to the career counselor at my alma mater (free career help for graduates!) and have my husband look over it several times, etc.

Greetings,

As someone who have assisted many on writing a resume, my opinion is to write a resume which summarizes your skills.

If you are applying for a job in a specific industry, a "Skills Based" resume is one which would be universal for each place your apply. Having a "Skills Based" resume can be a generic resume for which you can modify should you need.

The cover letter can be used to "briefly" identify the skills you have for the position your are applying.

This is where you would have a separate cover letter for each position.

It is not necessarily the amount of time you take in writing a cover letter and resume rather than does it best represent you and your skills, and what your can offer a prospective employer.
