There are plenty of people got jobs without internships, but doing an internship makes it extremely easier. It could determine if you get a job or not. The kind of job you are talking about is a very specific career oriented position. You need an internship, a degree, references, pass a test and present well in the interview too. It sucks that you dont get paid in your internship but the good news is once you land your real position you can expect a decent paycheck and benefits.

The kind of job your friend does is an entry level position. They are great cuz you get experience and have flexible hours and can be part time or full time. The catch here is dont expect a lot of benefits or a big paycheck. It really depends on what kind of GPA you finish with. Myself finishing with a 3.1 GPA i decided that i don't need an internship. But still now 1 month after graduating from college with my Bachelor i still cant find a job related to my major. The whole idea is that its really competitive and most employers would rather hire someone with experience in the field rather then someone who is new to the field.
