Been out of work for a while now and I've decided update my resume. Does anyone have any tips that can make a resume stand out and also tips for what not to do on a resume.

Thank you!

Tailor your resume to the job.

Your resume writing will be different if youre applying to an internship position or an entry-level job. Academic resumes, like those for fellowship applications, can include information that your professional resume might not.

List impressive skills.

Work experience is important to include when youre writing your resume, but other valuable skills you have can also add a lot to your application.

If youve gained useful skills from your extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or part-time jobs, include them when writing your resume!

Put it all together.

Theres more to your job application than simply writing a resume. Remember to include resume references and a cover letter when your writing your first resume after college.

These critical additions to your application can create a better picture of who you are as an employee “ and will make your resume stand out from the pile!

Beside contents, I believe in order to make your resume stand out is to make it very different to others. I have figured that people usually use black and white write up for their resume, and it is quite boring to the HR. I have done quite a bit research and figure that less than 3 out of 100 job seekers send a graphic resume, and I believe it is quite eye catching and impressive if you could send out an impressive and professional graphic resume.

I personally is using it and results turn out quite well. You can check out http://www.resumedictionary.com/resumetemplates.htm, and it is quite cool!

Things to avoid: make sure there is not spelling mistakes and also be honest with everything in there! I found people always make up stuffs in their resume which turns out quite bad at the end.

Hope this could help and good luck! :)

Name

Contact information (address, phone number, email)

Objective - "To gain employment at Company ABC as director of human resources" ....or whatever

Education - Most recent school name, location, years attended, degree obtained (or is being worked on) and grade point average if above a 3.0. Followed by any previous schools.

Experience - most recent first. Company name, position held, dates employed, job duties. Followed by previous employment.

If you do not have a lot of work experience...

Volunteer work - organization name, dates volunteering, what you did.

There are a lot of nice formats out there - clean and simple is best. There are a lot of templates out there, but honestly everyone uses those and employers can spot them from a mile off. Try making a format of your own.

My resume has been tweaked more and more over the years, and if you'd like to see it, send me an email and I'll share it.

Oh, and unless you're an expert in a field with years and years of experience and lots of high-level job responsiblities, it really should be on ONE page only.

Your Resume should include the following:

Name

Contact information (permanent address, contact number, and professional email address)

Education

Professional experience (Accomplishment & Achievements, not a job description)

Technical Skills

Also make sure you go back about 10 or 15 years- unless your most relevant work experience is from farther back.

In addition, include a cover letter and address all gaps in your work experience. Include only years, not months, when listing your work history. This not only makes it easier for the reader to quickly understand the length of time you held each position, but also it will eliminate any gaps that may have occurred within a span of two calendar years.

Make sure to include all the critical information (first and last name, postal address, email address, and phone number).

Don't include inappropriate information (age, height, weight, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, etc.)

Use a headline to grab the prospective employer's attention but avoid unnecessary visual elements.

Make your resume seem accomplishment-oriented.

Make sure the job experience you list is related to your target job.

Don't go into too much detail, but hit the key points that make you look successful.

You know, maybe you should just get a free critique of your current resume . . . there are some great free critiquing services out there, one I like is at http://resumellow.com

If you're applying for a corporate job, you want to make sure your resume will not get filtered. Because many corporate jobs are competitive, they do not have time to go through hundreds of resumes. Instead, they have a system scanning for a certain keywords and a recruiter will select only a handful of resumes from the resume pool. I wrote a detailed blog about a technique that I used in my resume to make my resume stand out.
