How do people apply and interview for a new job in a different state?

If I were to apply for a job in a different state, are there any special steps that I would need to take? How would the interview happen and how can you score an interview? Also, how do you go about finding a place to live and coordinating that with finding a job?

Unless you are trying to find a job that requires special skills like being an engineer then it is more difficult to get interviews if you aren't using a local address. What you need to do though is apply for jobs through company websites. After you apply you need to follow up with a phone call asking if they got your application and if there is any more information that you can provide. Also if you can ask them when they will start interviewing for the position. Once you do get the interview then you will need to drive to the location just as if you were in town. Hopefully if you get the job then you will know the general area that you will need to live to be close to your work. If you have savings and good credit you won't have much problem finding an apartment to live. It would also be a good idea if you got a general list of places in the area ahead of your job search. That way once you get the job you can call those places to get everything going. If you can save up about 6 months of living expenses you could make the move and then conduct a traditional job search. This will enable you to know the area more and will most likely reduce the cost of the job search because you will be going to local interviews.

Depends on what kind of a job it is. Blue-collar work-- You are very unlikely to be able to find work in another state without going there in person and getting a local address first.

You'd have to be looking for jobs that start at LEAST in the mid-to-upper $30s (in yearly salary) before you're likely to score interviews.

Jobs with even high salaries (and thus, a higher skill set they're looking for) will often pay the travel expenses of an interview FOR the candidate.
