How do i convince my boss to let me work from home?

3.5 years ago, I moved to a state far from my home state to take an inside sales job for the company where I already worked. I never expected to be here so long as reps that did well could expect to move up within a year or two and take a job back at the original office I worked at. Things have changed at our company and many reps are kind of stuck in limbo right now.
Now, 3.5 years later, I feel my relationships with my family and friends diminishing and have a sick grandmother and mother. I really just want to move back to my home state regardless of whether I get a promotion or not. Has anyone gone through the process of convincing a manager to let them take a traditionally "in office" job and move it to a "work from home" job?
Here are some key facts on my specific situation:
-I have been in the company top 10%
-I have had the top dollar and percentage increase in my region
-I was "rookie of the year" in my region
-I just made president's club, which is for sales reps who have been at the top of the company 3 yrs in a row
-I was made to pass up a great opportunity in another division of the company because we were in a busy sales period and the national manager of sales wouldn't approve it.
-We have a couple other reps that work from home, though I think their situations were more "do or die"--their husbands had the better job and they had to relocate no matter what. I think that my manager would know that if he denies it, I have no choice but to just stay in our office.
-there is no real specific need to be in an office as it is a pretty independent job and we all have company laptops. In fact, a competitor company closed down its inside sales office and allows all reps to work from home.

If you have others in the company that work from home then why not you? You have certainly proved yourself worthy to do so. Put a proposal together and ask. In your proposal explain how the company will benefit. |
