How do I have better luck finding a new job?

I've been unhappy at my current job. I'm a medical assistant who was unfortunately terminated in 09 and I didn't find anything til later that year which is my current CLOTHING STORE job. I'm already loooking to change my career to veterinary technology and I am definitely not getting the respect or money I deserve and need with this job (at least I've got it though thank god!) I've looked everywhere for a new job and online and getting out as much as possible and I don't know where to go. I'd love to be a receptionist even at a vet clinic or an office assistant between Arlington Texas and weatherford Texas but it's so hard finding something. What do I do.... Anyone have any advice or suggestions? Or know a vet office!? Lol. Help!

Honey, I work in veterinary as a tech. I'm in Dallas and when I was a receptionist "back in the day" I made jack squat. I finally started making money when I became an RVT, and even that's pretty poor-- though I admit, it could be worse. I get paid pretty well for my field since I work in a specialty practice. But if you need to "make good money", you won't find it in veterinary medicine. You WILL have a lot of fun and the work is emotionally rewarding and mentally challenging, so it's not all bad.

I do this work because I love what I do, I love animals, and I like medicine. I don't do it to get rich... only to get "what I need"-- a roof over my head, and food in my belly, gas in my car, and to provide for my fur babies.

I'm not trying to steer you away from vet medicine, but it's NOT a high-paying field. Go for it, if you want a job that you "love" and not one that makes your wallet fat (yet you hate it). I wouldn't have stayed in the business as long as I have (over 25 years, including during high school!) if I didn't LOVE my job.

Stop limiting yourself to one job, one pay, and one location.

You've pretty much narrowed your job market to 1 or 2 vet clinics, and they probably have a staff already.

Put out a ton of apps in a ton of places, then worry about accepting the job or not once you have an offer on the table :)

If you are interested in being a veterinary technician then you need to look into getting a degree in veterinary technology. While it is not currently required that you be credentialed to work as a veterinary technician in this state, you will earn more respect if you have taken the time to get an education and proved your proficiency and there is a movement towards licensing veterinary technicians in Texas so in the future it is likely to be a requirement to have the degree. Many veterinarians are now looking for educated individuals because they understand that a credentialed technician can increase the amount of work that can be done in a day and affect the clinic income greatly. Credentialed veterinary technicians can also go on to specialize and are in demand for specialty practices who do a high volume of skill and knowledge-intense procedures on a daily basis.

So, just like any other kind of job having the right education can greatly improve you chances of finding a job.

The pay and benefits are not great in this position, so you will want to screen your possible employers as well. High end practices and specialty practices are likely to offer better pay and benefits.

You may also wish to go through some of the state associations related to veterinary medicine as they tend to post job listings. The Texas Association of Registered Veterinary Technicians and the Texas Veterinary Medical Association would be to groups to contact.
