How do I get my first job and apartment.?

I am turning 20 in a month. I was a college student but now I have failed and trying to get out. I never worked before or lived on my own. I am 200 miles away from my home town and I do not want to go back, ever. I am trying to get an apartment but they ask for an employers name and number and an average income. So I tried to find a job first. I keep getting stuck at references and previous work experience. I don't know how to get my first job and I am screwing myself by living in this dorm room. I became so over whelmed I try to sleep for the rest of my days.

The first thing I would advise is don't try to do everything at once. It is a process. Sometimes, in fact usually a frustrating one because I can say from my own experience I wanted it all now. Next I would suggest that you get a phone book and look up the nearest employment opportunities center. Where I live in Florida it is called Jobs Etc. They offer an amazing array of services free of charge and you would be remiss not to take advantage of them. For example they usually start you off with a bunch of tests which measure what your strengths and weaknesses are. Next they usually give you tests which measure your likes and dislikes and your personality type which they combine with your aptitude results to point you to a job you would be best suited for. Any skills you need to polish up on they usually have free tutorials to enable you to improve these skills.

Next, and this is very important in my opinion. Take just a few hours a week and volunteer somewhere. You may like tutoring young kids who are having trouble learning to read. Maybe it is a soup kitchen. Whatever is your flavor. But do it. There are three things you will gain from this. Number one you will get yourself out of your troubles and feel better about yourself. Second you will gain references which make you much more likely a candidate for a job because not only do you have the references but it shows good character and work ethic. Third, you most likely will build connections who may also be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

Finally don't get too depressed. Like I said if you do these things you will most likely do fine. I wish you luck. One more thing. Don't balk on a job you may find beneath you. I have more respect for people who work at Mcdonald's not only because they are at least doing there best and trying but they are doing some very difficult work.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Yeah no landlord would accept you as a tenant without a job. You need to find a job first then you can get the apartment. I would just stay in the dorm untill you find a job apply at every place and see what happens.

Job first, then savings, then apartment. You don't like where you are and you don't want to move backwards, so get out of bed and work your butt off to take that first step. Get a job, any job. Everyone started with no experience, so someone out there will hire you. You just have to do the work to find that someone.

Or just keep doing what you're doing and keep getting the same results.
