How do I find a job that's not listed on craigslist/monster/etc.?

I recently graduated majoring in Speech-Language Pathology.. it's not a super in-demand job, but there are jobs out there. I'm looking for a job in a city I currently don't live in. I just would like some real world advice on how to go about looking for one..
Should I..
Find clinics/schools and just e-mail them a cover letter/resume?
OR
call around and ask if they're hiring?
Any advice is welcome!
