How can I apply for a job without my boss getting a call asking for references?

I'm doing 0K at my job, I don't have any problems. But I haven't sent out my resume in over a year because I don't want some company asking my boss about me, and giving my boss the impression that I'm not happy with my job.
They say if it ain't broke, don't fix. But I do wonder if I could be doing better elsewhere. I know of this job I would like to apply for, but I don't want them calling my boss asking about me.
I don't have any problems with my boss, and I don't want my boss thinking there are any problems. If I sent my resume, they'll probably call my boss.

Prospective employers do not call for reference when you submit a resume. They will only call after you interview once mutual interest is determined. You can tell the interviewer not to call the current employer, because you do not want to risk losing that position as you are currently employed there, and they do not know that you are seeking other employment yet. They will ask you for names and numbers of previous employers who they should call for reference. Only give them the names and numbers you want them to call. |
