Has anyone ever heard of a company doing this?

My bf has worked for the same for 20 years as a tool and die maker in a factory. Monday he went in to work and him and 6 others were told to go back home with 3 days pay and to think about why they should be an employee there. After 3 days they will come back and tell why they think they should be employed there. It was all people that had been there for 20+ years, always there and very responsible people. I've never heard of any place doing this before and he is really freaking out. I was wondering if this is something common and we didn't know or should he be worried about his job?

Sounds like one of those black belt money crunchers stepped in.

Never heard of them going this far before though.

If it is a black belt that was hired with your company - usually very little happens.

The company soon realizes that this is bad for employee morale.

Sigma Black belts are people hired by companies to trim down costs and create efficiency.

Again, temporary. Just tell hubby not to do anything wrong.

I wouldn't say it's normal, but it's definitely something that is interesting.

People with two decades of employment at the same company have a different understanding of how that company works. It sounds like the company is trying to ensure they continue to hire people that are loyal and want to know why people stay there. it would be my guess that if they have not had these conversations on a regular basis in the past, that something in the business has changed and is causing them to find an answer to why people stay there. It would not surprise me to learn that the company hired a consultant to help them come up with this.

If he is worried about his job, after 20 years of employment he should be very comfortable asking what the purpose of the exercise is, and asking how it will affect his job. Were it me, it the first thing that would have come out of my mouth when someone said go home, we'll pay you, see you in 3 days.

Unfortunately your boyfriend is getting mind screwed. I strongly encourage him to look at this like an unpleasant work assignment that he must do. He has to sit down and make a list of positive reasons why they should continue to be an employee. These reasons need to be that he is the most positive, hard working, loves the company, and that the company would loose a lot of knowledge and experience if he left. That way he'll keep his job on his terms. Then he can go out and find a better job that will pay him well for his knowledge and experience without all the mind games. Then when he goes to quit them they may beg him to stay and give him a raise when the seriously have to think about how much they will lose. Crappy situation to be in but it's all in how you deal with it.
