Good reason for resigning from previous job?

Category: Other

Hi all,

I'm currently unemployed seeking employment, I'm 19.

I was previously employed at a major pub/restaurant in my city centre, yet I was increasingly marginalised, bullied and outcasted there which made the working environment completely intolerable. I worked there for 4 months, but was considering leaving after just 2 months. I decided to stick it out, but it was only getting worse.

I resigned into unemployment about 2 weeks ago now and I'm now looking for a new job.

With regard to previous employer, I thought I would put as "reason for leaving", a common field in every job application form down as "Left to persue personal goals", a positive and vague citation as opposed to citing the bullying I experienced.

Good idea?

Yeah, you need to keep it positive, becasue it will be awkward to try to elaborate on this answer during an interview.

You need to be careful though, what are you going to say if you asked for references from this previous employer?

I was in a previous job where I was constantly criticised by my team leader and others told me he was bullying me. In job applications I put this aside emphasising the positive experiences that I gained in the actual work, commenting that I needed to leave because I took it as far as I could and I stated that the additional experience I would gain from the potential employer closely matches my career goals.

Good luck with it, I'm unemployed and seeking employment too.

Bullying may be one phrase but more than likely "politics" or some such game was not your forte.

First you need to like the job. Adapting is another matter.

Allow yourself the comfort of doing something you like;however, honesty then may be for your edification not another employer. Unable to adapt to employer cullture sounds somewhat closer to the mark or some such.
