Gaps in employment history?

This may or may not look like a gap, depending on who's looking. I plan to quit my job and freelance doing the same work. Since I pretty much do everything right now in my current job, the only major difference will be that I won't be losing 3/4ths of what I make to my boss. I also plan to catch up on my certifications and training, which I haven't been allowed to do in my current job. If I apply for another job in the future, is it going to be a red flag to potential employers that I quit a (seemingly) stable job to freelance?

Just say you went back to school to further your career.

Showing that the time spent not working for someone else with additions in education along with adequate information about your freelance jobs look more impressive to an employer. It shows initiative, something employers look for.

Won't be a red flag. Include the freelancing on your resume if you apply for another job in the future.
