Feeling hopeless :( Will I ever find a job?

Category: Other

MyaMya

I'm 19 years old and I've never had a job before so I have no experience or references. I was always more focused on school and I've been home-schooled so I have no references. Now that I am done with high school education, I have taken a year off from school (university) because I want to get a job.

The problem is that I've applied almost everywhere and all do say is "not hiring" or "apply online" but when I do apply online, it's like no one ever takes the online application seriously because I never get any calls back.

It's gotten to the point where I feel so hopeless and helpless and I just want to give up... and give up on just life altogether.

What should I do? I need to make money because there are a lot of things I need but I cannot afford.

It also doesn't help that my parents are giving me a hard time about this. They think I am not trying hard enough, but I am. I feel like no one will hire me because i have no experience.

Please help. =/

Thanks.

I know exactly how you feel; I've applied to 20 businesses and searched for almost four months now, and still have not gotten a job. It seems like no matter what you do you don't get a call back, but that's the economy for you. The only suggestion I could make is to keep calling the businesses every other week to follow up on your application and to inquire if there have been any openings. Also, include a resume and cover letter with your application. This helps make you stand out from the other applicants and shows you take extra effort.

And about the experience: How will you get experience if nobody will let you get your foot in the door? Your parents should know this, and if not, sit down and have a calm conversation with them, stating that you're doing everything you can and the reason that you're not getting a job is because of a lack of experience.

Don't give up! You will eventually find a job; it just takes time. I know it's frustrating, but as long as you're doing everything you can, then you are fine. In the mean time, I would suggest volunteering for experience and doing odd jobs such as mowing lawns, babysitting, washing cars, pet sitting, etc. to earn extra money and experience.

Hope I helped, best of luck, and don't give up! :]

Get your insurance license. It's always possible to find a job selling insurance, and the income can be really good. Doesn't require any other experience

A week after you apply, call the manager and follow up on your application. If a lot of people didn't do this, they wouldn't have a job. Keep on trying week after week until someone calls back for an interview. It helps to get a volunteer job, look into that so you have some references and experience.

Good luck. Something will come up, don't worry. :)

Your parents could be a source of information. . . ask them if they know anybody who could give you a job for the summer so you can get your feet wet. Ask if there are any intern positions open where they work. I do not know your field but have you thought about volunteering? volunteering at a venue that provides a service related to the field where you want to work will give you experience, give you something to do so you don't feel useless, give you access to folks with whom you should be networking (and getting to know), and more importantly, volunteering sometimes turns into employment.

Also, don't forget to visit the dept. of labor that services your area for their help with all sorts of free information, resume help, a list of jobs and job links. they can show you how to sell yourself so prospective employers will look at you seriously.

It sometimes takes longer for on-line applications to be processed -weeks longer.

all my best

Yes that totally sucks.

Even people WITH tons of experience are having a hard time.

Applying online is almost not worth it because so many highly qualified people apply.

It would have been good if you had worked a summer job, oh well, but you are still young. You should follow your interests and get involved with the type of major you are going after, volunteer or try to get entry level work.

If you commit yourself to being involved with what you want to do, you will meet people and find opportunities. Please be careful as there is a lot of wolves out there too.

Heck call the university career guidance center and talk to them.

also ask parents for some clues.

I have almost the same problem too. i am almost 20 years old and had only one real job and that's last year. and my parents are constantly telling me to get a job assuming as if i haven't try at all and it gets to the point of annoying. sad thing is that there isn't much to do. when you send your application online they go through a computer and only resume with certain keywords that the employers need will pop up on their screen. so, try your luck on figuring out what i needs.

btw, how i got my first real job is by a friend, it may seem weird to ask your friends but hey, u need money. so ask if they know some openings. usually employers hire people that had people working for him/her. so anyway thats all i can say best of luck. and hopefully you and i can get a job this summer. =)
