Employment Credit Check?
I responded to an ad on craigslist for a job and got an email saying I got the job, but they needed to perform a credit and background check. I know this is not unusual as many jobs require credit checks and nearly all require background checks. My concern is that she told me to get the check myself and send her the verification number. I want to know if everything is on the up and up. My question is, should you have to pay to get a credit check for an employer or do they usually pull it up on their own? Here's part of the email so you can make a better decision:
"We've taken some time to look through the applications. And we've decided to make you a part of our staff. We'd love for you to come in for an interview. We are still REQUIRED to run credit and background checks on all our employees. This is because we have a lot of private and sensitive information lying around in our office, and the nature of the work itself. Visit this link to get the credit report; it's free of course. Simply email us the verification number--we don't require you to send us your private info via email. But we WILL need your verification number to set up your interview. The BG check will be done in person. E-mail me if you have any questions. Look forward to seeing you soon!"

I wouldn't trust this at all. No company I have ever worked with or for has had you run your own credit/background check - By supplying them with the verification number, they can pull your entire credit history which opens you up to identity theft and credit card fraud. A real company, although they would have access to the same info, would have you sign an authorization to run the check and state their privacy policy etc. in writing and then run it themselves with the credit bureaus - Not through a cheesy "free trial" site. |

That is a scam and they are trying to get you personal information. DO NOT DO IT!!! |

I definitely would not do it! Although you won't be sending "your private info via email" you will be handing over the verification number, which allows them access to the entire report. Any reputable company would have their own means of getting the information instead of having a potential employee do it themselves. |
