Embarrassed about collecting unemployment... do other people in my household have to know?

Category: Other

HelpHelp

My boyfriend and I are recent college graduates and have been living with his mother, step dad and younger siblings in their home since we both graduated this past May. We are both still currently looking for jobs. My boyfriend is waiting to hear back on a great opportunity (say a prayer!) and so far I have been unsuccessful in finding a job in our area and in my field. I am continuing to look, however my bills are piling up and I am getting worried...

I have been thinking about filing for unemployment until I can find a job and I noticed on the application it asks a number of questions like the number of members in my household and their primary financial role in the house.

My question is, will anyone else in the house be able to tell that I have filed or that I am collecting unemployment (if I am eligible)? I am pretty embarrassed....

Hi,

You have to had worked and lost your job in order to get unemployment! Did you recently lose your job?

Do NOT be embarrassed about collecting unemployment [ts not like you're getting help from the state (thats not bad either unless you really need it some people take advantage of it)]. The ecomony is really bad right now and ALOT of people are getting unemployment (its just money that you earned while you were working). Once you file for it the unemployment office will start sending letters to your house (if you check the mail you can get the letter before anyone else in your house sees it) other than that they WILL NOT and CAN NOT find out any information about your unemployment; I know that its againist the law here in Arizona. Also when you call in or anything you'll have to put in a 4 digit pin (one you will make up once you start the process) and noone can get into your infor without that pin and your SSN. As long as your looking for a job (while collecting unemployment) I wouldnt worry about it. The money you're going to get (God willing) isnt going to be alot but it will deff help with the bills. When I lost my job 2yrs ago (while pregnant) I was like ugh I dont want to do this blah blah blah but I sucked up my pride and I did it. It helped me out alot. If your job fired you and deserve to get that money. Like I said its not like you're on government cash assistance or anything ( again nothing wrong with doing that unless YOU REALLY NEED IT!!).

Goodluck!!

I'll pray that your bf gets that job. I know how hard it is to find a job. I've been looking for 2yrs.

Oh CONGRATS on graduating college!! :)

They might become suspicious when you start receiving paperwork in the mail regarding unemployment and when you start having "secret" weekly phone calls (when UI starts calling to verify that you've been looking for work)

I think that it would be okay to let them know. There is no need to feel embarrassed.

First, if you have not had a job and lost your job, you are not qualified for unemployment. Employers pay insurance into the employment security system for benefits to employees who lose their job. Not getting hired right out of college is not the same.

You and your boyfriend may be eligible for food stamps. Don't be embarrassed, and other need not know. Jobs are scarce, and some of these programs are necessary.

You will pay taxes into the system when you find a job, and those taxes go to these programs so you have nothing to be ashamed about when times are hard and you are truly making an effort.

You can't collect if you haven't been working and contributing into the system, so your concern is unnecessary.

If you file for unemployment you will recieve a lot of mail that is from the US unemployment agency. That may be a big clue for them.

Have you worked before? If you have not paid in a good amount then your unemployment benefits will be very low. The most you can possibly draw is a little over 200 a week for 6 months I believe and that would be if you had paid in for a long time.

You may look outside of your area. You are young and a move would be a good opportunity. You should also talk to your university... they have a job placement (graduate services) office that can help you look for jobs across the nation.

The odds of finding your perfect job right out of college are slim. The odds of finding it in your local area are even slimmer. Good luck though.

You don't qualify for unemployment benefits if you have not lost a job. Being a college student is not a job. You might try food stamps or welfare.

If you're not related, there's no reason why anyone in the house has to know. But at some point, questions may arise.
