Does my job ever stop eating my soul?

I just graduated from college in the spring and started working in an office on Tuesday...It's been 4 days and I already understand why people jump off office buildings.

Does it ever get any better or does it always suck this bad?

One's response to you could only be a subjective one. There is no one solution that may be given you, because on jobs a person is always contending with the free will of others.

You could say that to suck and to work are synonymous infinitives. But in this economy, a person is fortunate indeed who is working. There is a learning curve regarding jobs, a long one. And depending on who you are, the curve may be steep or not so. And so you are are not only faced with the job itself but with yourself as a unique individual coming to know yourself. People often say that working concerns not so much the job itself but about the people with whom one works. There is merit in this adage.

So let it all come at least to finding the type of work for which you have a passion. If you have that, you can focus and not have to be bothered with needless follies and foibles of others.

But if the work itself bears no interest to you and the people with whom you work suck, then perhaps you are better to begin planning a departure -- but slowly, quietly, saying nothing of your displeasure with the job and certainly not divulging that you intend to leave it.

If in America is where you work, there have long been studies taken on employee satisfaction, sometimes done by statistics-taking corporations, such as the Rand Corp., and the Pew Institute, and sometimes by federal government agencies such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The dissatisfaction rates are always way up there -- some 80% of workers feel their jobs suck. Even health organizations have studies to show that illnesses are directly related to the jobs that people have, who feel theirs suck. Does it get any better? Perhaps not -- unless you can find the type of work you love doing and are paid handsomely to do it relative to the overall industry that you will work in.
