Does master degree count as work experience?

Category: Other

I am arguing with a friend of mine on the possibility of an employer adding master's degree as work experience? He swears he have seen it happen, what do you think?

A masters degree is classified as EDUCATION not work experience unless there was an internship involved for instance student teaching for a masters in education/teaching .. then you could put it down but otherwise it is ONLY EDUCATION

Unless you have some apprenticeship program going along with it, the degree falls squarely in the "Education" column of your resume.

Definitely not.

BUT a lot of companies nowadays are looking for a person who got a degree.

No, work experience is always different from education. You gain work experience only from one thing - work in a job. It is a whole different category altogether as education, you do not put up with co-workers, pay, strains of work schedules, or the other attributes of job work. Masters Degree is purely education (a nice touch in the resume at it).

It depends on what you were doing during your master's degree.

Lots of master's degrees are just classes and a thesis or project. My husband's degree was like that. My degree was like that.

Some people, however, have a financial aid package that includes work for the university as part of the master's degree. You might be doing research or working at a Teaching Assistant. In that case, your "master's degree" would count as work experience because, well, you're working. In other cases, part of the degree program involves a semester or more of "practicum," which may count as work experience.
