Do you take breaks at work?

Category: Other

I rarely take a break at work even though, according to the employment manual, I'm entitled to two 10 minute breaks. Yesterday, after having not taken a break all day, I managed to finish my work about 1 hour before having to leave. I let my co-worker/trainer know that I had finished the tasks. From my start date she told me to let her know if I am ever done so she can find something else for me to do because, as she says, there's so much to do. Instead, she said that she would let my supervisor know and I would get fired for not having anything to do for that last hour (why would they pay me for doing nothing, right?). She did find something for me to do, but next time should I take the breaks so as not to get ahead of myself? Should I let my supervisor know what happened so she doesn't get the wrong impression?

Take the breaks for sure. Not only will it help you pace yourself, but some companies take it seriously when they find out that employees are not taking breaks, and you could get disciplined if the right person finds out that you are skipping them on purpose.

Also, you could proactively talk to your supervisor and tell him/her that sometimes you do finish your work early and would like to know what you are supposed to do when that happens, because you are not clear on the procedure in that circumstance. You could say that you are getting conflicting messages ("come to me and I'll give you something to do!" vs. "You're gonna get fired!") and that you want to make sure that you are properly informed. Try not make it sound like you are tattling; make it sound like you want to know what to do.

If that doesn't work...make sure that you fill up your day with your assigned tasks, even if you have to go slower. I know that sounds counterproductive, but it might save your job and your reputation.

Also, it sounds like your co-worker is a little crazy...sorry to hear that.

You need to have this conversation with your supervisor, they are the only ones that can explain your companies policies and expectations.......

edit:

from READING your post it is obvious that you do NOT understand their policies or their expectations, if you did you would not be asking this question........ this is why i suggest you have this exact conversation with your manager.....

communication is a great tool...............when used!
