I just turned 14 yesterday (i live in Massachusetts) and I want a job. I know you need to get a workers permit/license but do you need to find a job before you get a permit? I thought you got the permit first and then found a job but I heard it was the other way around.

No, you don't need a job to get a work permit, but you do need a work permit to get a job if you're under 18 and haven't graduated from high school yet. By law, they can't hire you without a permit.

Basically, the work permit shows your age and shows that you have your parents' permission to work (a parent or guardian has to sign for it). Employers need to see it, and probably make a copy of it, to hire you.
