Do universities consider work experience more valuable than volunteer work?

I am a 17 year old who is going to applying at Waterloo University for Math/CA, or AFM.

I was just wondering, generally, which of the two, work experience and volunteer work, that universities and colleges consider more for their applicants

What a coincidence! I am an AFM student who just finished my first year at Waterloo.

Work experience is definitely more valuable that volunteer work. Some recruiters won't even consider you as a candidate if you have no work experience. When students ask recruiters what they are looking for when hiring a student, most will say that they look at work experience first. Others might say marks are important, which is true too. But as long as your marks are above 80, they don't really care. If you cannot find any work to do, volunteering is just as good if you are in a leadership position.

Edit: Sorry, I read the question wrong. Having work experience will help more than volunteer work in terms of finding a co-op job. But on the application to get into the program, work experience is the same as volunteer work.

Volunteer work is weighed heavier. But a well-rounded background is good.
