Caught sleeping on the job?

I've always been under the assumption that being caught sleeping while on the clock is a sure fire way to the unemployment line, but recently (3 weeks ago) a coworker was caught sleeping and to date nothing has been done about it. Not even a suspension. Is this common or does it seem this individual is being given preferential treatment?

This co-worker is either a big time ***-kisser or is related to the boss in some fashion or the other.

Many times HR or supervisor take action that is not noticed by other employees. It could be making a note in the personal file, written disciplinary action or other form. Many employers are afraid to pay unemployment so they are very careful how they fire employees. Honestly, you may not know what has happened with this situation. Privacy concerns in accordance with HR policy should prevent your supervisor from gossiping about disciplinary issues.

Maybe the boss will take notice and may fire when another mistake is made. I suggest you stick by the rules and not flout them.

My Answer: None of the above.

My guess is that one of two things are going on:

1) The employee is valuable in some way that's not particularly obvious. It might be as simple as being related to the boss, or perhaps that his/her work makes more money than everyone else, or any number of reasons... but the company may be getting something special from keeping on him/her.

2) The boss can't be bothered to enforce the rules. This happens in any number of different cases - sometimes when the boss is ill or distracted in some way (such as personal problems) or just has more important things to do (as far as s/he is concerned).

In either case, my answer about what to do about it is the same.

If possible, make discreet inquiries to find out whether it's 1 or 2 and then what the nature of the situation is... and in the meantime, stay out of it, and encourage your co-workers to do the same, and just get on with your work as if nothing is happening. No one likes a busy body.

If it does turn out to be that the boss has too much on his/her plate, if you are/can be close enough to offer support, then do it - but otherwise, just leave it.

As long as the person sleeping isn't doing any harm, then it's really none of your business, and trying to do something about it wouldn't be helping anyone & besides...

Doing something about it is just a big minefield & you're more likely to get hurt than to win at anything.

If you REALLY can't cope with Mr Dozey, then get yourself a different job & don't say anything about it until you do.

The only other thing that people do is to go to HR, but I wouldn't recommend that, because:

a) it puts you on HR's "radar" as a busy body and a troublemaker and

b) HR isn't there to protect the employee (which is what they say to everyone anyway) - the real reason behind HR is to protect the company

c) so the last person you really want to know that YOU have a problem is the company's policeman - they're just as likely to shoot the messenger as they are to shoot Mr Dozey

in short, take up a hobby to take your mind off Mr Dozey & give you a sense of accomplishment that has nothing to do with work & then you'll be too busy to mind anyone else's business than your own.
