It is perfectly normal to be anxious about trying to make a decision that will affect the rest of your life. So be smart about it. Research.

1.) Start by making an in-depth self assessment. Take this time to explore and learn about yourself. What do you like to do, what interests you, what are you good at, etc...

Begin your journey by answering this question, What kind of career do you want?

2.) Online research is available for almost any career you can think of. Read, read, read. Read everything you can find relating to the field you are interested in pursuing. Check out these websites for career options: http://www.bls.gov/k12/index.htm http://www.bls.gov/oco/ - Occupational Outlook Handbook http://www.ilworkinfo.com/icrn.htm. They tell you salary, required education, related careers, etc..

3.) Consult your school counselors.

If your school participates in a job shadowing program then I recommend that you take advantage of the opportunity to take an inside look at the companies that host job shadowing.

4.) Research the Help Wanted Ads in your local newspaper. (Just to get an idea of what is available in your area)

5.) Talk to successful people you know. Talk to people that work in the field you are interested in.

6.) Networking. Volunteer. Help out at a fundraiser. Maybe your parent are involved in an organization, or someone you know. This is a good way to meet professional people who can give you professional information on their careers. Kind of an insider look.

You're on the right track just knowing that it's confusing to try to choose a career. Just remember, you are going to be miles ahead of everyone else by doing the research and applying your High School studies to further your career interests. Start with this website, I think it's the best one to begin with. http://www.bls.gov/k12/index.htm.

Good luck.
