Can you stretch the truth on a job application?

Category: Other

Ryan SmithRyan Smith

Im 17 and will be 18 in a month. I want to get a job set up to the city I am moving to but from talking to big companies I have found they really only like to hire people when they are at least 18. My question is, if I mark that I am available to start the day AFTER when my b day is, would i be automatically denied? I have a feeling that would happen because at the end of every application, it makes u click and agree that all info u give is correct. Any help would be awesome! thanks

Lying on an application or resume is considered immediate grounds for dismissal if you were hired. Don't lie. Period.

In this job market, I don't think it's worth the risk. Stretching the truth is just another name for lying. And if the person who hired you finds out you lied on a job application, you could be in trouble to the point of being fired. And being fired for misconduct doesn't look good on future job applications. Because if you lie in one instance, what assurance does a potential employer have that you won't be doing other dishonest things later? We both know you won't, but it's just not worth it.

I wouldn't do it, because whatever company your applying to is gonna find the truth out eventually and then you have the risk of not being accepted into the company/companies you applied at. So just tell the truth and don't stretch anything.

I don't think that this is a lie or a stretch of the truth at all. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying?

You are including your birthdate, right? So they can do the math to figure out that you're 17 right now and will be 18 soon. No lies there.

You are saying that you aren't available until after your birthdate. This indicates to them that they would be hiring you at the age of 18, not the age of 17. Therefore, if they prefer 18+ candidates, then you are giving them a way to hire an 18-year-old candidate. You're just getting the paperwork in line since you will be 18 so soon. I have applied for jobs that take more than a month to even call back. It isn't a bad idea to get the application in now.

Be aware, though, that you might be better off just waiting a month and then applying and being available to start "immediately." Some jobs that hire quickly aren't going to want to wait around for a month for you. You may have more options if you just wait a month. After all, if there are any jobs that are "put off" by the fact that you are currently 17 (I still don't think it's a lie, but some employers may not be interested in even looking at an underage candidate) then it's not like you can submit another application in a month. You're better off just waiting a month and then starting your applications then.
