Can you offer any advice on what to include in a cover letter for a fashion design internship?

I have the opportunity to apply for a fashion design internship but I need a little help with my covering letter. I really want this position, so I want to wow them over at the company but I don't know where to start.
I am starting a fashion degree in September 2011 so the reason I am going for the internship is to make my university applications stand out from the rest, but I think the fact I am not currently in fashion-related study may ruin my chances. I am starting a course in art and creative design this September.
Any tips / advice?
