Can my potential employer find this out in a background check?
I was just offered a job by J.C. Penney, and they said the next step would be a background check. I have no criminal history, but on my application, I did alter the truth a little. 5 years ago, when I was 15, I was laid off from a job in about late mid-July. On the application, I wrote instead that I 'returned to school' in August. The place has since gone out of business however, so I was unable to provide contact information. Could they still find this out?

I have spent the last year 2 years researching and testing background check services for a consumer review site (http://www.CompleteReviews.net ) and in that time have run tons of background checks using many different companies. Most employers do not automatically check employment history in a background check though it is possible to do so. Even if they do include this type of information I highly doubt they would be able to access information from when you were a minor as it is not that relevant. I would not worry at all. |

No. It's JC Penney, not the FBI. Relax. |

Don't worry, it is just going to be a standard criminal check and possibly credit. Nothing to worry about. |

Don't worry. I hire people all the time> We say we're going to look, but we don't. Just be Cool.. |

Background checks do not check jobs - there is no database of the places you have worked - and if the place has gone out of business, they couldn't even call them to verify anything |
