Can I make up a job history to help me find a first job?

I'm 18 and I'm trying to find a job until I go to college in fall, but I've never worked before so I don't have any job history. And I think not having one is really hurting my chances, so what if I just make one up? A cheap one like I worked at McDonalds or something, at least it wont be blank which looks worse, and besides Ill be applying at places like Walmart and Burger King and places like that so it's not like it's some high end job and I need to really be skilled. What do you guys think?

Bad idea.

Even if it's not a high end job, it's a business, and potential employers would expect you to act in an acceptable professional manner. Faking a job history will only end badly in the long run. What if during the interview someone asks you to talk about experiences from the job you say you've had? Or decides to call a past employer? Those are very common things for people to do, and in doing so, they would realize that it's a lie and will immediately chose not to hire you.

I know leaving the work history section blank is embarrassing, but it's by no means the deciding factor in deciding to hire some one.

A lack of experience can be made up for by being eager to learn, easily motivated, honest, and hard working. Those are the qualities they're really looking for.

You should apply for stores in the mall, they arent that skilled and you could see your friends or somthing if they shop there. like either in the food court or hollister, ae, pac sun...etc

Don't do that. They'll do a background check and when it comes back that you lied, you won't get the job. Worse yet, if they do hire you and then do the background check, they'll fire you on the spot.

It's never always crystal clear how to start hunting for a job, I was in a bit of a hole recently when I was job searching, until I discovered the website in the box below that presents sensible tips. I soon got myself going down the correct way, and in a few weeks after a few interviews I scored a really great job.

It's never a good idea to start any career, job or life by telling a lie. Even little white lies come back to haunt you in the future. I didn't know fast food places required experience. Heck they usually don't require the ability to speak English.

Nope, they can check your employment background and catch you lying. Anyway, you should just do what I did and try a busy wal-mart store. Call them back and ask for an interview it usually works.

Bad idea in my opinion. Usually a place like Wal-mart will call your past job to check your work history and that will instantly trash your application. Fake work history is worse than no work history.

Instead consider listing whatever else you did such as volunteer work or extra-curricular activities. Talk about your accomplishments there in terms of times when you showed leadership, initiative, or if nothing else then the ability to show up on time and get things done.

A lie is not a good way to start off a career.....honesty is always the best policy. What if they followup on it or tax records? ??.....

If you're honest and are enthusiastic about the job you're applying for, you will sell yourself for the job.

Good Luck!
