I live in Kansas and I was wondering where can get a job here at the age of 14. My mom is struggling and I didn't want to ask her to buy me clothes, plus i think giving some of my check to my mom will help things out. PLEASE HELP, TRUTHFUL ANSWERS PLEASE.

At fourteen, unless it's a family owned store, you probably cannot get a job anywhere. (or family owned where-ever) I admire you wanting to help your mother, but I doubt you can find a job for yourself.

Sorry

Best of luck.

Hey, I know what you mean by wanting to help your mom but honestly I don't think you can. I live in Texas but I'm pretty sure that all around the U.S. there's child labor laws that prevent you from being able to work until your at least 16. If you live in a small town you may be able to work for a small business but if your in a big city it's not likely that you'll be able too. Plus, you have to keep in mind there are a lot of older, more experienced people out there that the employer wouldn't have to worry about being so young. Sorry, I know that it's not the best news to hear but you wanted a truthful answer... I hope that helped a little bit.

I know in my state you can go to your school councilor and get a "permission to work" slip. It's basically like a work visa but takes less time and you don't have to deal with a foreign consulate (thank your lucky stars....). Depending on the county sometimes the school just gives you permission, other times there are other folk who have to review it. I got one when I was 14, and it only took a few days.

After that, however, it's up to the company whether or not they'll hire you. Your best bets are usually places like pools with concession stands, drive in theaters, or a close family friend. I worked at the martial arts studio where I had been taking classes for five years, so I was pretty lucky - if you can get these permits in your state your councilor will have a better list of places to try than I could suggest.

There is also a possibility that this has changed, too. I got mine almost a decade ago, but I do believe my younger brother got one less than a year ago. Talk to any school contacts you may have, or you might be able to do some research on the internet.

After thought: Think about something like baby sitting. Most local Red Cross offices offer a baby sitting course that will get you CPR and First Aide certified. This is helpful to have any way and will look good when you apply for jobs when you're of age. The organization usually has a way to contact its graduates, as well, letting you know of interested households, and puts these people through some background screening so you know you're not going to some pedophile's house. You could put up fliers as well, but take safety precautions. Don't give out your address or cell number - make them give you the info. This is riskier because you DON'T have the assurance that the people calling you are safe. If you do put up fliers, ask your mom first. She might not be okay with you giving out the family number, and will probably have concerns about your safety. She might be able to hook you up, however. Chance is she has friends who need a baby sitter or can help you find a family to start with.

In NY you are allowed to work by the age of 14, get on the internet and google what is the age requirement to get a job in your state. You'll most likely need to get your working papers. You can ask your guidance counselor for the form that your doctor must fill out as a physical exam. If you can't at your age in Kansas, you can always do small things like

- Dog sitting/walking

- mowing

- washing cars

- selling candy
