Can I call HR directly to inquire about the status of a pre-employment background check?

I was offered a position contingent on a successful background check. I was told it would take up to 5 business days and it has now been 9 days. I called the local manager who hired me on the 6th day and she said it's still in process, but now I'm starting to get worried. I'd like to get another update, but I don't want to call her again and seem like a pest. Would it be tacky and/or unprofessional to contact the HR dept. directly to inquire? Especially since I've already inquired once a few days ago with the person who hired me? HR is located in another state and they're the ones handling the background check.

Depending on where your background information is being pulled from, it can take longer than 5 days. It is incredible in this day and age but some records are still pulled by real people, from paper files, located in archived locations. In my personal experience, the longest wait I've ever had for information was from New York City - and it was clean - 11 days. That is one of may reasons it may be delayed.

If you want to come of has helpful and not a pest, ask if there is anything that you need to provide, that you are thrilled to start working, and would like to help if at all possible. Depending on how that goes over, you could even offer to contact the person responsible for the background check (HR) directly to ensure they have all the information they need. Just be willing to help in any way. You will likely be met with "no, we're all set and just need to get the results", but the fact that you are willing to help and invested in the process can be good.
