Can I ask my hr department on guidelines for resignation?

I'm in a sticky situation - I have booked a trip to Europe in August for a month. I want to put in a "polite ultimatum" notice - I plan on taking this trip, but I understand if they need to give my job away (which I assume will be the case.) The policy at my company requires 4 weeks to get your PTO. Under normal circumstances, I would give 4 weeks notice, but the head of my department is going on maternity leave in early July. I have a good relationship with my coworkers and wanted to give warning so my boss could get everything situated before she left. My mom thinks I should only look out for myself and give 4 weeks notice - she thinks they may fire me before my trip in mid August.

Can I ask my HR department about this and expect them to keep it confidential? What should I do? Help!

Depends on the company you work for, it might be better though to go through the books and do things officially as it were, as the company I use to work for a colleague wanted to go to Australia for four weeks and she like you thought she would have to pack her job in, she was allowed extended leave (it was unpaid) but it meant her job was kept open for her.

It maybe worth checking with a union rep (if you have one) or on the intranet or company handbook and see what the guidelines are with regards to this situation, as I know all companies will be different.

Also have a word with your team manager now whilst there is still time before her maternity leave and see if there is anything she can do. If you don't get on with your tm then find one that you do and have a casual word with them. You will be amazed at what can be done if you ask. Remember they have invested time and money in you so providing you are reasonable at your job if they can keep it open they usually do.

Enjoy your trip.
