Best way to apply for fast food job?

I was recently laid off from a job that I held for 8 months. I need to rebound quickly so I figure I can get a fast food job quickly. Should I call and ask if they are hiring or should I just walk in in person and ask? Does it matter? I'd appreciate anyone with experience from the hiring side. Thanks!
