A lot of local, state, and federal agencies are doing this because of the budget shortfall. Here in Oklahoma the state is going to force people that are eligible for retirement to retire before they actually lay off the younger employees. They are working on some buy out offer, but they are the ones that will lose their jobs first. I don't think they can lay you off because you're 65 years old, but if you're eligible for retirement then I believe they can force you to retire. |

Absolutely not! If you are still in good working condition, they can not ask you to step down from a position due to your age, that's discrimination, there are laws against that. as long as your job performance is still adequate you are fine. |

Yes they can, the incomplete age discrimination laws don't prevent it. However, they do state that age shouldn't be a factor when you reapply for your job, and you will have the most experience! |

In the UK you can be forced to retire at pension age, 65 for men and 60 for women at the moment. That is the Law as it stands at the present. |
