Are there any legit jobs where I would be able to work from home and take care of my daughter?

I am a 21 year old stay-at-home mother of a 2 1/2 year old. I have been out of work for the last 3 years due to medical reasons. My last spine surgery was in March and because of it I will be "stuck" doing light work the rest of my life- if and when my Doctors/Surgeons let me return to work. Is anyone aware of some type of employment I could do from home with no cost to start? Alot of the "Work From Home NOW!" links I have researched are just scams or require a huge amount of money to start. I would appreciate any ideas at all. Thank you for your time.

PS- If it helps, I live in North Central Minnesota.

I've never been to Minnesota, but I do have a friend in Belgium who works while taking care of her baby twins. She is the caretaker of a Jewish synagogue; she and her husband live in this little apartment just upstairs from the place of worship. Her duties include cleaning and maintaining the synagogue, so while she works she can just bring her babies in a basket because she'd be working while nobody's there to worship anyway. She gets Saturdays off because of Sabbath, and Sundays the family goes to a Christian church.

Are you any good at baking? If you are, then start a simple home business like selling brownies or decorating cakes for home delivery. It will require some cost at the start of course, like buying the ingredients, or equipment if you don't already have them. But its not much; as long as you have a solid business plan (if you can't do this yourself, ask a friend to teach and help you) you can borrow money from your parents or relatives for a start and pay them back in installments. Advertise online using facebook and twitter and a blog. Bring samples whenever you go see friends or whatever.

I used to come to people's homes to do their hair, makeup, or nails. Again, takes money to start up, but you can borrow this if you have a good business plan. The money's not bad. I didn't have a baby to take care of back then, but if you happen to be working in a friend's home that day you probably may be able to take your little one with you. Otherwise, pay a teenager to babysit for you.

If starting costs are really no option for you, try housekeeping. My ex did this to support himself throughout college in Europe, just needed to came in twice a week per house to clean and tidy up. He worked mostly when the person living there isn't home; if you could work a similar arrangement then you will be able to take your daughter with you. You should be able to do the same in America.

Another job I used to do was translating and proofreading. No start up costs, and the money was great. I just met the client when they needed me, get copies of the work to be translated or proofread, and work into the wee hours of the evening. When the job is done, payday comes. The only downside is that it's hardly a regular job unless you're very good at advertising yourself and administering the continuation of that work. Other jobs you can work using this scheme include freelance graphic design, interior design, and selling insurance. If you want something regular, try being a private tutor for school kids who need help and discipline in doing homework.

If you're any good at writing, then you can make extra money as a writer specializing in taking care of the home and young children. Set up a blog on Blogger or Wordpress, get it on Google Adsense to generate some cash, and get followers on Twitter. Post something daily that appeals to young mothers like you, like practical tips of taking care of your toddler, beauty and style on a budget, healthy meals on a budget, experiences like taking your child for her first haircut or class, or just random musings about life that came about while you raise your child. Every week, re-format your best post into a magazine or newspaper article and send it. If it gets posted, you will get paid for it.

One of my classmates in college has an online shop and sells using facebook and blackberry messenger. She has a supplier with whom she is connected; every month they post new photos of products and tag the shop's "friends". When there are orders, she calls her supplier then have the goods delivered to her customers. Since she only needs to order goods when there are customers, she doesn't have to stock so many things in her house; it's pretty practical. Orders should be secured with a 50% down payment first to avoid costly cancellations. Takes credit card, paypal, and bank transfers. This kind of business is quite popular in Southeast Asia where I'm living; I don't know if similar business plans exist in the US.

As you have already found out, there are no legitimate work at home employment at all !!! They are all scams, no matter what you read or hear. Look at it this way - if they were legit, then there would not be 20 million people unemployed !!!

If I were you I would try to go back to school and get a college education. I'm assuming this "light" work you speak of is low-physically intensive work... like most white collar jobs. If you can't do physical labor, do mentally challenging labor... and get paid more! Maybe the surgery was a blessing, guiding you towards a better future.

I suggest you take up training your self in office work, accountancy or similar desk bound work experience.Alternatively train for a childrens nanny or social services positions where you can work from home. Here in UK your ailment would be classed as disable and will have priority over jobs offered for desk bound jobs like telephonists, office work and government advertised jobs inclusive of flexible hours sought by employees. Also many companies are looking for home based sales agents working via telephone.

First of all, think of some of your marketable skills. Do you bake? Do you knit? Do you play the piano? All of these can be parlayed into an online or stay-at-home business.

If you bake, make jams, knit, etc., trying selling your goods online. Ebay is a good place to start, but search for other places that are closer to your area. Perhaps you can strike a deal with a business to take your goods off for a share of the profits. Or you can post online ads on related forums and send your goods by mail (make sure to charge for shipping and handling).

If you play piano, speak a foreign language, etc., you could consider work as a part-time tutor. It would only take a few hours of your day and you could ask the student to come to your house and set him/her with a task if you need to go check on your daughter.

Would you be able to handle a few more children? If so, you could work as a babysitter. Check the laws regarding daycare in your area, however - a certain number of children could constitute a daycare, and that comes with its own set of troubles. However, taking care of one or two children after school shouldn't break any laws.

You could also prepare healthy meals for working parents to pick up after work. This would take some starting capital, but not if you plan well. So many people are busy nowadays and don't have time to feed their families healthy food. You could plan simple, healthy meals, prepackage them and sell them to busy families in your neighborhood. They could just swing by and pick them up. It would be a good alternative to fast food.

Good luck!
