Are cover letters important when applying for a job?

It may vary according to field but I am in the restaurant industry and have seen them torn off and thrown in the trash repeatedly. My resume is very clear and concise so in my recent online application (big department store) I did not choose to attach a cover letter. Was that a bad choice?

As someone who works in the recruitment industry I see a lot of resumes. The ones with a well-thought-out but fairly brief cover letter that clearly explains why they are a good candidate for the job are most successful at getting my attention, even for low level positions. |
