Exactly. It depends on the area & business.

I started with a $25K/yr salary working a clerical position in higher education, with a review for a raise every 6 months.

I make fine on that, but I am single and childless.

Are they tough??? Well, it depends. If you don't have a mind for organization, detail-oriented tasks, or technical ability... if you don't have the patience for taking direction from multiple managers, being told misinformation by one source only to be corrected by another, constant policy change, and being asked to do tasks but never getting recognition or a "thank you", then yes, the job is tough and probably not for you.
