Any vet techs/assistants out there?

I was wondering if there are any vet techs/assistants out there who could maybe give me a little job description. I've been considering going into this after I graduate next year but I want to know some more duties a vet tech would have in more detail. I've done a lot of research but would like to know first hand from a vet tech, please only answer if you know a lot about this job, I don't want any web sites or anything I've seen a lot of those. Also, could you please tell me anything I could do to help be accepted to a school for this and what courses would be helpful in highschool (I'm assuming bio and chem right?) Would chem be a huge thing, cause I really suck at it although I'm pretty good in bio and I love it. What types of grades would be best? Thanks!

Don't just assume that because you had a problem in math or chemistry under one teacher that you will have the same problems with another. Everyone learns differently and there are many different styles of teaching so you may do much better with another instructor. And chemistry is not a huge issue for veterinary technology, math is going to be important but your instructors will help you if you have questions and you can always get a tutor as well.

If you are really interested in working with animals, take the time to volunteer in some different areas--voluteer at a veterinary clinic, at an animal shelter, etc. This way you get an idea of what different jobs really are and then you can determine what you need to do to get the job that you want.

If you do end up wanting to be a veterinary technician, then you apply to an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program and do whatever your state requires to get your credentials once you have earned you degree. You can contact your state veterinary technician association for help with the details for your state.

Brush up on your math skill, besides the science. Training for the veterinary field is as difficult as training to be a people doctor. As with any career path and higher learning, the folks who graduate with a higher GPA are going to get the better offers. The very best source for information about a career is to talk with someone who is doing the job. Your best local source is your local vet. Our local vet has hired a few local highschoolers to work as secretaries; answering the phones and taking appointments, billing and filing. These highschoolers were able to work part time and got first hand info on what classes were necessary. Two of these folks have worked their way through vet tech and now fulfill that role at the office, while two new people have taken over the secretarial duties. I'm not saying your vet will be able to offer the same opportunity, but you don't know until you ask.
