Administrative assistant tips?

Hey everyone,

i'm applying for a job as an administrative assistant at a medical university. i've worked as an administrative assistant for 3 years at a financial service company years ago and to my knowledge and understanding...the duties vary upon the organization that you're with. since i have some experience under my belt of basic tasks like:

- data entry

- generated reports

- answered busy phone lines

and things of the sort. is there anyone out there that has worked in the administrative asst. field in a medical environment that can tell me what this job entails as far as the basics?

also, will i need to purchase my own office supplies?

Worked temp for 10 years.

My secret:

Set up a tickler file.

If you have reports to do or phone call to make on a certian date this is a must.

You take 30 files - number them 1 to 30.

Say you have to make a phone call on the 15th of the month to someone.

Take a sheet of paper - write on it - August 15th - make phone call to dr. blank about follow up.

File it in file #15.

And check your tickler every morning when you come in the office.

If you have a report due 6 months from now - Write December 10th - make report and file it in file #10.

You can also buy a book to keep track of things - I just was to cheap to do buy the book.

Supplies will be paid for by your employer - you just have to ask.

The tickler worked well as a temp.

Since a book would have had to be left with the new secretary that would replace me.
