A question about american worklife?
Hi there,
first, please excuse my lousy english, i'm German (yeah right, lederhosen, oktoberfest, bratwurst)
I love watching TV series like "Orange County Choppers" or "American Hot Rod".
Something odd poked in my eye: every mechanic has his own tool trolley (i mean as his own property). Is it commom in the US for workers, repairmen etc. to bring their own stuff?
I don't know the prices of tools in the States, but in Germany a good assortment costs an arm and a leg (ok, i'm talking about "tools" here, stuff-that-you-buy-once-in-your-lifetimeĤ not that DIY store crap).
In Germany you bring NOTHING for work. You can show up barefoot and in underwear. The employer usually provides you with all you need, e.g. shoes, workpants, safety stuff like protection goggles, earplugs and of course all necessary tools.
What, if you wreck something by oversight, do you have to pay for it?

Tools like that cost an arm and a leg here, too. If the mechanic or the repairman is running his own business, then yes, he'll have his own tools (it's pretty hard to be in business without them!). But if he's working for a larger business that deals with repairs or mechanics, he definitely will not show up with his own tools. I'm not sure about workpants and safety stuff, though - I think that depends on the business. |

Most mechanics in the U.S. outfit their own tool chests - yes it can be expensive (however, you do get a tax deduction :)...protective gear is a mixed bag (some companies provide it, others don't). |

If you own your own business then you have to supply the tools. If you work for someone else then they will usually supply them. If you break something once in a while the company will usually pay for it, but if you break things all the time it is going to be a problem for you. |
