Who pays for the pre-employment drug test?

I am applying for a driver position and I am being asked to bring cash to my interview, LOL.

They request that I pay $5 for a DMV printout, $25 for a background check and then $85 for a drug test. They claim it will be reimbursed when I get my first pay check. I've never had to do this before. Seems a bit odd, shouldn't they pay?

It is odd, but generally not illegal. You would need to check the laws in the state you live in for specifics - as every state have their own regulations regarding this.

If they have this policy, then you should get it in writing. You should also understand what happens if anything comes back "positive" and disqualifies you.

What they are essentially doing is putting you on the hook if the background, DMV or drug test comes back positive or with something that disqualifies you for the job. Then, you are out $115 and don't have a job. One reason to do this is to deter people who are interviewing and qualified, but are not committed to taking the job.

Yes, they should pay. But some employers do just offer reimbursement.

I have never heard of this either. I agree, it is always the potential employer that picks the cost up.

If you live in Australia and they verbally said "that you will be reimbursed" for the money. Get them to do a physical copy of this reimbursement and if they do NOT pay it back, you can always report them to the ACCI (Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Who will pursue in an investigation and get their company sued/shut down if they do not pay you back.

If you live in America, I'm sure there are legislation like this that exist for the same reason?
