What questions would I be asked for an interview for a trainee legal secretary?

...and what answers would be good?!

I am a paralegal and I often sit in on intern interviews for attorneys and paralegals, so I think any suggestions I have should be able to help you out.

I often tell people, think of the type of job you are applying for and what skills you feel are absolutely necessary to be successful at it. Then try to think of possible questions an employer would ask to gauge your abilities in those areas.

Each interview will be different. The other poster is accurate in telling you that you should have your resume memorized. Maybe not memorized, but at least know what you put on it. You'll look silly if they ask you about a skill you may have listed that you might not have been very truthful about. I think that is many people's mistake. They embellish their resume to get the interview and then can't display that they are as strong as they advertised.

Always have a little snippet about yourself ready. Believe it or not, that is the question most people trip on. My boss comes right out and says, "So, before we get down to business, tell me a little bit about yourself." How you answer that first question often dictates what future questions they are going to ask.

The other poster had some great ideas. Expect questions that will test how ethical you are. Expect questions on your stated abilities. How long have you worked with the software you use. What level would you say you are. Beginner, expert? What are your professional goals?

What answers would be good? The honest ones. Trust me. A good interviewer will know when you are dishonest or embellishing and if they don't catch it in an interview, they will catch it when they are training you. Don't try to impress them with "white lies" or embellishments on what you do or do not know. It will eventually be discovered. Just be honest.

Good luck.

They will ask you for an example of when you have dealt with a conflict within the workplace eg pressure between two people you've worked closely alongside - use something generic and realistic; for example people arguing about a deadline not being met.

You'll also be asked about when you've dealt with a task that you didnt necessarily agree with - ie a moral conflict; whatever you use as an example, turn the negative into a positive.

Also expect questions about data protection and how you've dealt with sensitive issues.

I used to work as a legal clerk when I was in university; just ensure that you are clear, concise and well-spoken, and memorise everything on your cv and you'll be ok.

Good luck
