What makes a good paralegal?

This is a very broad question. Let me start by stating I am currently a paralegal in the State of Texas working in a construction litigation firm. I am a member of my local and state bar paralegal associations. I consider myself a very active paralegal. I also aid my supervising attorneys in the process of picking paralegal and law clerk interns.

With that said, I feel there are many qualities that make a good paralegal, but much of what you need to be good at depends on what type of law firm you working in. In general, you need to be good with software, computers, law office technology, you must be organized, disciplined, a multi-tasker, observant, meticulous, have an eye for detail, have good communication skills, oral and written, able to solve puzzles and think out of the box, have the ability to retain a lot of information, have the ability to be someone's right hand man/woman, have a good memory, and be ethical.

And again, this is also dependent on where you work. I need to be well versed in lien laws whereas you might not need to know a thing about them working in a different area of law. Each law firm works differently and requires different qualities from you.
