What legal rights do I have?
I am British. I moved to Ireland from Manchester to be with my Irish boyfriend after a year of doing long distance relationship. I live in his house which he owns outright. Since I have moved to rural West Ireland, I have had odd spells of work but because there is no work most of the time I have had little income. Moving out here has been lonely and my boyfriend can get abusive (he has a smoking and drinking problem and can get aggressive-he's hit me before). I gave up a professional career (was never out of work since 16) which doesn't mean anything over here and a gave up great social life ( loved partying). Not being able to have a job and not having any friends here has gotten me very depressed and for which I have had counselling but I am always down. My boyfriend treats me very well sometimes, other times he can be verbally and physically abusive. We have been together for 6 years now. Sometimes ,he says he will marry me and other times when we argue-he will say get out of my house (when he knows I've nowhere to go). I've felt suicidal at times because he really makes me feel so low and I have no one to go to here. I love him which is why I moved over for him but I would like to know if we did break up, what rights I have. I am 32 he is 40. I never have to pay bills. He doesn't have a mortgage on his house. I've paid for a lot of the stuff in the house from my own money like furniture furnishings etc. I have also helped him look after his two mum and dad with dementia and alzheimers since I moved over-which has also contributed to depression in me and stress. Will I have any rights if I we broke up with the house or money? I know it was my choice but I gave up so much for him and I just want to know if he left me, what claims or rights I have? Can anyone help?

You have no legal rights to the property or anything in it unless you can prove that you bought it. |

No rights. Get out out now, go back to Manchester and start a new life without him. You deserve a lot more than a smoking/drinking abuser. |

Check to see if there is any laws that state if you live together for so long you are bascailly married its a common law. Anything you bought is yours so if you break up you have all rights to material items, as far as the house if it is in his names you most likely have no leagl rights over it. If he treats you like this then it is time to move on. You are old enough to know when enough is enough and you will be proud of your self when it is done and over with. You will be independent and not have to have help to stand on your own two feet. Just keep your head high and pray. |

Cannot see in British law that you have a right to anything from him. He gave you a home, he paid for food and utilities while you were not working, I think you should leave it at that. |

No I can't see that you have any 'rights' to anything. You do need to get away, back to where you have friends and a chance of a better life though. |

Its a drastic situation to find yourself in and the mere fact you posed the questions indicates that you may have come to your senses and realised that although you are in a relationship, its one which is turbulent and sometimes violent and the time has come to move on. |
