My dad draws social security on my family, so can I get a job without losing my check?

Ok, so my dad is retired & there are 5 people in my household. My dad, my mom, my little sister, & I all get a social security check. My big sister used to until she turned 18, now her check is split up into the other checks. Anyway, I'm 17 & in desperate need of a job BUT I've been told that I can't get a job without losing my check! I've also been told that I can have a job just as long as I don't make more than my check. Sooo, can I get a job & still get my social security check???

Judy is partly right and partly wrong here. She is correct that your sister's check didn't get divided up between the rest of you once she turned 18 - they just don't pay it out anymore period once you reach the "age of majority" which is 18.

Here's the deal. Your dad can call the social security administration to get the specific details, but you CAN work. However, if you make over a certain amount of money per year, you will lose the SS check. There is a limit that you can make. Because it might depend on the type of SS check you receive, I can't tell you the amount. I do know, for example, that my children get a "survivor's" check from social security due to the death of their dad. The check is made out to them but for me to use for their support. When they are old enough to have jobs, they can work, but cannot earn more than a certain amount per year. I can't remember off the top of my head, but it was somewhere around $11k or so. As long as they don't make more than the allowed amount, they will still receive the check each month from social security.

You or your dad needs to call in and ask about it. Just google "Social Security Administration" for your area and see what they say.

Good luck!

Actually when your sister turned 18, her check was no longer given, it wasn't split up among the other checks.

Who told you that if you got a job, you wouldn't get your ss check? As long as you are still your dad's dependent, you will still get it.

Call the social security administration or go to their office. Please do not depend on Yahoo to answer these questions for you. Everyone's situation is different. I know asking people on the Internet is "easier", but you will not get any closer to an answer. Look up their local office and go talk to them. They are really nice and will be able to tell you the truth for YOUR situation.
