Is this salary legal in NY?
Hello, I am a fifteen year old male who is being employed as a camp counselor over the summer. I found out that my salary is $100 a week... Now I did the Math and I am working 8 hours a day, 7 if you exclude my hour lunch. I do not get paid for lunch, which is fine, but if I did the Math correctly I am only getting paid $2.86 an hour. I have all of my legal working papers and all of that fun stuff. Basically, I am saying is $2.86 an hour legal to give to an employee? (It's a 36-40 hour work week)

Are you staying at the camp for free? Receive three free meals a day? You have to consider all the benefits and other 'perks' when figuring out how well you are being compensated, either financially or otherwise. |

You are 15-years-old, legally a minor, there are no 'minimum wage' rules for minors...if you don't want to get that work experience (which will almost certainly help you get a better position when the time comes to get a "real" job), then don't do it! |

Although I gave piggie a thumbs up the problem is you are only 15 and the language on the DOL page is difficult to understand even for the average adult. The best thing you can do is call them directly at 1-866-4US-WAGE. Explain to them your situation and they will be able to tell you if the wage is legal. I just find it highly unlikely they are going to take the responsibility of hiring 15 year olds to sleep over at any camp site as an employee and the required insurance involved (which is a lot of money.) Again, call 1-866-4US-WAGE. They can help you and give you a straight answer. Good luck! |
