Is it legal for an employer to fire someone without any reason or explanation?

Recently my boss sent around a paper that he claimed everyone in the company signed and agreed to. I didn't see anyone else besides myself sign this paper. The paper stated that the company can fire anyone they wish at will without any reason or explanation of any kind. I asked the boss if this meant that if I wear the wrong color shoelaces, that he can just fire me and I have no legal grounds to fight it. He also stated that by signing the memo, it means that if you get fired the company doesn't have to pay unemployment insurance since it is understood that you work for an "at will" company. This doesn't seem right to me. Is this all legal? Can a person just arbitrarily be dismissed for no reason and then be denied unemployment benefits as well? Even if they prove that they are one of the most productive employees in the company?
