Is it legal for an American company to have volunteers who are minors?

Is it legal for a gaming company to employ minors 14 -18 as volunteers moderating a forum under a binding contract? What if there is no binding contract? If there is no contract, would that reduce the control the boss has over the volunteers?

I believe the answer is that it is not legal.

The contract may be null and void as it is against public policy. The issue on employment of minors in something related to gaming appears to have tainted the contract.

Is the company hiding behind the arrangement to engage the minors as volunteers?

The information provided by the website below clearly indicates the illegality.

If there is any kind of contract then they are not volunteers.........

also if a volunteer performs duties that qualify as work or perform duties that an employer would otherwise pay an employee to do then legally they are NOT a volunteer and can claim wages.

a volunteer in a "for-profit" business can NOT perform any task that an employee would perform.
