Is it against Florida or Federal employment law to send an employee home earlier than they were scheduled?

I was trying to cut the floor at the restaurant I manage because labor was high. When I told an employee they could go ahead and go, they refused, saying that it was against federal law for me to send them home early. In all my years, this is the first I've heard this...and if its a fact then I guess I've been breaking the law for the past 15 yrs.

No it is not. Scheduling is left to the employer. No employee is guaranteed any number of hours unless they are covered by a union or other contract.

The employee is mistaken, or trying to bs you. It's not against the law, federal or any state. In a very few states, NOT including FL, under some circumstances you might have to pay them for a minimum number of hours (in CA, half their scheduled shift or a minimum of 2 hours).

Tell the employee they can just sit there all night if they want to, but they are off the clock as of NOW when you tell them to leave. Or just fire them.
