Is any law that covers staff food as compulsory?

I am working for a restaurant chain and for the past 3 years we have been giving free staff food to every member of staff but I have just find out that one of my competitors just started charging £2.95 for 2 plates of a selected menu, I was wondering if is any law that can stop me changing my system or is any implication for charging the staff for food?

Whenever you ask a question about the "law" you MUST state where you are.........

Man, you are generous - back when I was a waitress, I had to pay for every darn lunch I had. But anyway, you are under no legal obligation to provide free food to your employees, regardless of what kind of business you're running.

If there is nothing in the staff contracts which mentions free meals you can charge them.

However, I can imagine that if you do, your workforce will leave as soon as they can and will definitely hate you for it and probably do a minimum of work afterwards.

Your choice.

You could even make yourself popular by announcing that despite the fact that the competition is charging for meals, you have decided that you couldn't do that to your wonderful workforce!

No law in the UK. Surely no business either here or in the States have to give free food, that is not logical. Charge your staff, this is eating into your profits.
