If a "sex offender" applied and they had a letter from the victim vouching for them, would you hire?

The Wondeful World of ME!The Wondeful World of ME!

My mother is threatening to charge my boyfriend with statutory rape if I don't break up with him. He is 18 and I am 16. I do not want to break things off with him, but if she presses these charges they could ruin his career plans to become a police officer.

The age of consent in Ohio is 16 according to the Ohio Revised Code and as long as I don't accuse him, he should be clear, right? Or could the charges ruin him?

I don't know what to do. Neither of us are bad kids, we both have plans for the future. Us having sex was completely consentual. I dont want him to loose his dream because of this.

Even if the charge was kept on file, would you hire an officer if he had the victim vouch for him that it was all a misunderstanding?

Y'all should be OK legally with you being 16 and him being 18, unless there was a time when y'all had sex when you were 15 and he was 18, and that would be my main concern. I don't know how close y'all are in age or if this is even possible, but if there's any chance that y'all had sex when he was 18 and before you were 16, I'd seriously consider pretending to break up for awhile. Just having the status of "sex offender" would follow him for the rest of his life and affect more than just him getting a job, the way things are right now.

The letter from the victim might not do much good, because he might not even end up getting an interview having that kind of charge on his record.

However, if it's physically impossible for you two to have had sex when he was 18 and you were less than 16 (like, if y'all are too close in age for that to happen), then I wouldn't worry about it. He wouldn't even get charged with statutory rape in the first place.

If the age of consent is 16, then it is legal and you mom has nothing on him.

First, your mother can't charge him -- only the police can. She can lay a complaint, but the police would still need a good reason to charge him. Even then, the charge won't be the issue. Lots of people have the charges dropped or are found not guilty.

A conviction would be a problem for him. But there would be no conviction as long as you were the age of consent, and testified the sex was consensual.

The age of consent is 16 right? Do you know what that means? What's the problem? Idiot...

To answer your question, a little hand written note from the victim would mean nothing. You can't become a polcie officer with any criminal record.
