I have heard of something called the "Working time directive". Is it true that i am only obliged to work a maximum of 48 hours per week?

It is "Expected" in my job to work more than 48 hours on a regular basis. & i can tell you now that i do.

I have been doing more than 48 hours per week reguarly for the last 18 months.

Is my employer breaking the law?

No, they are not

if they are forcing you to work more than 48 hours a week, then yes

but you have to first say your not willing to work more than 48 hours

if they then say you must, they are breaking the law, unless you signed an opt out claws
