Do Paralegals have to work with clients or can you work alone?

Do all Paralegal work require working with clients? Can Paralegals do behind the scene work that don't require you working the lawyers' clients? I am more of a behind the scene person.

I am a construction litigation paralegal and I very rarely deal with clients in person. Most of my contact with clients is via email and the occasional telephone call and fax. I chose this area of law because I also do not really want to deal with clients.

With that said, you need to understand that you do what the attorney needs of you. As far as I know, there are very few behind-the-scenes jobs where you absolutely don't deal with clients.

You should avoid criminal law, family law, and civil/tort/personal injury law right off the bat. That will knock about 90% of the jobs out there for you. Keep that in mind. The most prominent firms are usually those top three. Also keep in mind, most of the behind the scenes jobs for the larger firms require a TON of experience. Those premiere jobs are reserved for those that did their leg work in smaller firms, and have a good education.

I do know a few paralegals that work for the GM legal department working in the lemon vehicle department. As far as I know, they don't work directly with clients. They receive the approved/denied claims from the attorney and just file documents, send correspondence and mail out checks. I honestly don't know why they are called "paralegals" as they do ZERO substantive legal work. They are basically secretaries sending out mail. You may be able to find a job similar to that, but these individuals already had a few years experience before getting hired.

If you are incapable of accepting client work in any shape or form, you will have a very difficult time as a paralegal. We are often the eyes, ears and extra set of hands for our supervising attorneys. Even in my firm, I have very little client contact, but there are times that it is needed of me.

Absolutely. Not all paralegal jobs are front office. You could even be a law clerk for a judge, or work for attorneys in a corporate setting where you really don't have "clients." Good Luck.

When you start for first time, you do what you are told. Its great. You get experience. Nobody will put you in same room alone with a psycho. If you have experience, you can pick and choose.
